Recording the membrane potential of neurons.

Description
(a) The giant axon from a squid is removed from the animal and placed in a bathing medium. A microelectrode impales the axon. (b) The potential difference across the membrane of the axon is recorded by comparing the charge inside and outside the axon. The membrane potential is steady at times and fluctuates at other times, depending on experimental conditions.
