SlideshowReport

The two major categories of postsynaptic receptors.

Description
(a) Ionotropic receptors have several subunits. Neurotransmitters bind to ionotropic receptors and directly open ion channels in the membrane. (b) Metabotropic receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors, which are discussed in Chapter 9. Neurotransmitters bind to metabotropic receptors and open ion channels indirectly through G proteins.
