SlideshowReport

The structure and function of the GABA-A receptor.

Description
Each type of GABA-A receptor has five subunits that form an anion channel allowing the passage of Cl? ions. When GABA binds to the receptor, chloride ions move through the open channel and hyperpolarize the cell. Various other molecules bind to different sites on the receptor. These include molecules that naturally occur in animals' bodies, such as certain steroid hormones, and drugs, such as sedatives and benzodiazepines, used to treat anxiety and other disorders.
