Sensory receptors.

Description
(a) Many sensory receptors are neurons that directly sense stimuli. (b) Others are specialized epithelial cells that sense stimuli and secrete a neurotransmitter that stimulates nearby sensory neurons. In both cases, when stimulated, the neurons send action potentials to the CNS, where the signals are interpreted.
