(a) Like many addictive drugs, cocaine and amphetamine stimulate the reward centers of the brain, including the nucleus accumbens and ventral tegmental area. (b) Cocaine works by blocking reuptake of dopamine, and methamphetamine works by increasing the release of dopamine at presynaptic neurons.
