Sigmund Freud (1856–1939). Austrian doctor who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology. Freud’s theories of the unconscious and his “talking cure” approach to treatment of certain mental illnesses had a profound influence on twentieth-century culture. Among his works are The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) and An Outline of Psycho-Analysis (1940).
