The effects of germ-line versus somatic cell mutations.

Tags
Description
The orange colour indicates which cells carry the mutation. (a) If a mutation is passed via gametes, such germ-line mutations occur in every cell of the body. Because humans have two copies of most genes, a germ-line mutation in one of those two copies will be transmitted to only half the gametes. (b) Somatic mutations affect a limited area of the body and are not transmitted to offspring.
