Gametic life cycle, as illustrated by diatoms

Description
(a) Diatom asexual reproduction involves repeated mitotic division. Because a new lower cell-wall piece is always synthesized, asexual reproduction can eventually cause the mean cell size to decline in a diatom population. (b) Small cell size may trigger sexual reproduction, which regenerates maximal cell size.
