DESCRIPTION(a) Epithelial appendages begin as an outgrowth of the epidermis and dermis. In the development of feathers and hair, this outgrowth gives way to the formation of a follicle. (b) The difference between the identities of different epithelial appendages, such as scales and feathers, are caused, in part, by the timing and level of early signalling events.
