Role conflict occurs when the expectations of one role conflict with the expectations of another role. For example, this could occur between roles where family, friendship, student, or work roles come crashing together. Role strain is the conflict that someone feels within a particular role. For example, you are an excellent student, and when the teacher asks a question and you know answer, instead of answering the question, you decide not to because you do not want to make your fellow classmates look or feel bad. The difference between role conflict and role strain is that role conflict is between the roles, while role strain is within a role.
