The chorion, an extraembryonic membrane, forms outgrowths called chorionic villi—the membrane being sampled. As the pregnancy progresses, chorionic villi grow only in the direction of the stratum functionalis layer of the endometrium. By late week four of development, the chorionic villi are blended with the stratum functionalis layer and begin to form the principal embryonic part of the placenta. Since this layer is created from the embryonic cells, those cells can be used to determine genetic abnormalities that will also be present in the embryo/fetus.
