The umbilical vein delivers oxygenated blood to the fetus. Blood that enters the fetus from the umbilical vein travels to the liver first. However, the immature liver cannot perform many of its filtering or storage functions (a job done by the maternal liver), so complete perfusion is not necessary before birth. Therefore, most blood from the umbilical vein bypasses the liver via the ductus venosus, which connects to the inferior vena cava and then flows to the right atrium of the heart.
