The Falkland Islands is an archipelago (meaning a cluster of smaller islands) in the South Atlantic Ocean, 300 miles (483 kilometres) east of Argentina. The 700+ islands have a combined area of 4,700 square miles (12,000 square kilometers), with a population of approximately 4,500 people. The Islands economy is largely based on sheep farming, with an emphasis on high-quality wool exports. The current sheep population scattered throughout the land exceeds 500,000, which equates to roughly 111 sheep per person; per capita, that's 106 sheep per square mile (41.6 per square kilometer). Since the Islands are located north of Antarctica, sheep farming had to have been introduced at some point in history. Early settlers who were of British origin ...

The coconut crab (Birgus latro) is a species of terrestrial hermit crabs that's known for the largest land-living arthropod in the world, weighing up to 4.1 kg (9.0 lb). They have also developed an acute sense of smell, which has evolved convergently with ...

Christmas Island is a unique natural habitat located in the Indian Ocean with many endemic species. The national park covers two-thirds of the island, which has been referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. Many people are aware of the red crabs whose mass migration to the sea has been described as one of the wonders of the natural world. Christmas Island has many other species of crabs, including the impressive robber crabs ( Gecarcoidea natalis). These may be the largest land-dwelling arthropod on Earth. Together these abundant land crabs clear the forests of leaf litter and maintain burrows that prevent soil becoming compacted, creating an open and diverse forest. This thriving natural system, however, was disrupted by an invasive ...

This Chinese ghost town became one with nature
|
view preview
An old fishing village on the island of Shengshan on the Yangtze River was abandoned for economic reasons, only to become one with nature. The island, a few hours east of Hangzhou Bay, is a stark contrast to the vibrant metropolitan skyline of nearby Shanghai - an image conjured up in many westerners' minds when imagining populous China. Some of the islands at the mouth of the Yangtze river are popular tourist destinations and have been described as a paradise for seafood lover, while others are inhabitable. The stunning scenery on Shengshan Island is the result of the houses and outbuildings being slowly consumed by nature. The seaside village now lies empty because it was more economical for the fishermen to move and work on the mainland ...
