When an organism dies, its muscles remain in a contracted state termed "rigor mortis" for a brief period of time. The anatomical reason why this happens is because ATP is no longer available to break bonds between the thick and thin filaments, which allows the natural movement of muscle tissue.

Rigor mortis( stiff, rigid muscles in temp state of total contraction, aka, tetany, aka stiff as a board) after death involves the release of Ca2+ ions from the SR once the active transport has stopped actively producing ATP. Once the proteins breakdown, (due to no blood flow, 02, electrolyte changes, etc) contraction stops. There are however phases of rigor mortis, early onset most acute, but there is a stage afterward, 72hrs, that it still exists. look this up for more info, but as a med student having worked on cadavers, i can tell you, they don't move like gumby.  Slight Smile

Rigor mortis! You have to look up the details, but it's basically because ATP isn't produced and the myosin head cannot detach from actin. Rigor mortis is past its peak after three days. So no, the coroner wouldn't have as much difficulty.
