Scientists have observed white deer mice living on coastal beaches in Florida and brown deer mice living in nearby forests. Compare and contrast how the theory of evolution by natural selection, special creation, and evolution by inheritance of acquired characters might explain this observation.

Three Categories: Evolution by Natural Selection, Special Creation, and Evolution by acquired characteristic

Items:
1. predicts that the mice in different environments needed to change in color, so they did so
2. predicts that the mice passed acquired characters onto their offspring
3. the white mice had higher fitness in the beach environment; the brown mice had a higher fitness in the shady forest environment; over time the average color of each population changed
4. claims that two colors of mice do not change
5. predicts that white mice and brown deer mice are descendants of an ancestral population that varied in color.
6. claims that the two colors of mice were created by divine intervention.

Which of the following items corresponds to the correct category?
