NADH is a electron carrier.

It is used it the citric acid cycle to transport electrons across the mitochondrial membrane. The electrons flow through four complexes, each of which pumps protons into the intermembrane space.

This H+ gradient is then used to drive ATP synthase, which pumps out one ATP per 4*H+.
