If A represents atomic mass and Z represents atomic number, which of the following describes an atom after a proton is emitted from its nucleus?

A. A+ 1, Z + 1

B. A-1,Z-1

Z describes the number of protons in a nucleus. A is the atomic mass and since the mass of the atom relies on both protons and neutrons, then A=Z+number of neutrons.

thus if a proton is emitted, A'=(Z-1)+neutrons = A-1 and Z'=Z-1 thus answer B is correct. A-1;Z-1.
