What process is used to determine which gene in a genome is the desired gene for genetic modification? For example, how did the scientists know that the Cry1Ac gene was responsible for crystal proteins?

One method is to discover out what other species produce this protein, and then compare genomes for similar sequences in the DNA.

Sometimes they work backwards by isolating the protein, analysing its 3-dimensional shape, and then from that deducing its amino acid sequence.
