They are less complex, but no less successful or less evolved than more complex organisms. If that's true, then you can argue that monkeys are less evolved than us, but both species (humans and species of monkeys) are still evolving to this day. Take the phylum Priapulida as another example, a group of marine worms with only 16 species. The priapulids are certainly more complex, more highly evolved, but are they more successful than the cnidarians?

They are definitely less complex. Main question needed to be answered here: is more evolved the same as more complex. Cnidarians have managed to survive 560 million years without needing to make any major changes. That is pretty successful as far as evolution goes (contrast this to the dinosaurs who lasted a couple of hundred million before disappearing). They might not be as complicated as some organisms, but that doesn't mean they are less successful.
