Auxin was the first plant hormone to be identified.  The chief function of auxin is to stimulate elongation of cells within young developing shoots.  What is the mechanism involved in auxin’s ability to stimulate cell elongation?  Identify another important plant response that employs a similar mechanism.

Auxin is transported over long distances, our understanding of its role during development comes primarily from studies focused on sink tissues such as root tips, where cells are largely undifferentiated and where auxin movement through the apoplast would not be impeded by secondary cell walls. Similarly, the protonation of auxin in the acidic environment of the cell wall facilitates its movement by diffusion across cell membranes.
