The fish (picture attached) should be either primitive or derived. Im having trouble figuring out which one, and WHY. Please help. Also, the fish has been bleached and the only color showing is for the bones.
Thanks!

Review the attachment.

"In phylogenetics, a trait is derived if it is present in an organism, but was absent in the last common ancestor of the group being considered."

It was used to replace advanced which doesn't necessarily apply to evolution since something more simple could be better adapted. Primitive is a trait that is older. It also has connotations of being inferior but that isn't necessarily true in evolutionary theory.
