hello, i am reading the Campbell bio. book and i am having trouble understanding these concept  in chapter 23.

-genetic variation within a population, i dont understand what they are trying to say

"quantitative characters which vary along a continuum within a population.
heritable quantitative variation usually results from the influence of two or more genes on a single phenotypic character."

In certain cases, two or more genes are responsible for creating a particular phenotype. For instance, skin colour is determined by a barrage of seven or more genes. For instance, not one gene is responsible for your skin colour.

It's sec. 23.1 page. 470 "variation within a population"
I'm pretty much confuse as to wht they are trying to say in that whole area about quantitative characters.

So its like when 2 or more genes is the reason that a person skin maybe light or dark, not just one where as there is only one gene that makes a flower either blue or pink? Is that the right idea I'm getting


 What do they mean with " most heritable variation involves quantitive characters".
