A day has passed which means that a new card has been revealed!

The answer to yesterday’s question was B: The first person to see a cell was Robert Hooke. He used a very primitive microscope, but when he looked at a cork under it, he observed cells for the first time.

Today’s question is: How many  blood cells does the human body  produce every second?

A) Ten
B) 130 000
C) 2 400 000

The answer to yesterday’s question was C: 2.4 million. Your body is constantly replacing old blood cells with new ones at the rate of about 2.4 million per second. By the time you finish reading this sentence 30 million of your cells will have died and been replaced by others.

A) Chytridiomycota
B) Hematocyte
C) Mycoplasmas

Can you justify that with proof? Turn over rate for blood cells is actually pretty long.

I found this quite surprising myself. Apparently this is true. Check out the Wikipedia page on red blood cells: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_blood_cell . The source cited is Erich Sackmann, Biological Membranes Architecture and Function, 1995.

The number feels astonishing and even more impressive if you think that the same amount of blood cells must be dying per second.

This was a tough one, wasn’t it? The answer was C: Mycoplasmas. Without a cell wall, they are unaffected by many common antibiotics such as penicillin. They can be parasitic and several species are pathogenic in humans, including pneumoniae, which is an important cause of atypical pneumonia and other respiratory disorders.

The correct answer was A!

Fascinating, isn’t it... that information travels at such high speeds within our tiny brain.

268 mph is the speed at which signals travel along an alpha motor neuron in the spinal cord, the fastest such transmission in the human body. Sensory receptors in the skin, which lack the speed-boosting insulating layer called a myelin sheath, are among the slowest, at 1 mph.

The correct answer was C!

There are two types of cell division: Mitosis and Meiosis. Most of the time when people refer to “cell division,” they mean mitosis, the process of making new body cells. Meiosis is the type of cell division that creates egg and sperm cells.

This was easy! A short search on Wikipedia would have done it Slight Smile The answer was C: Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield was an English electrical engineer who shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in  Physiology or Medicine with Allan McLeod Cormack for his part in developing the diagnostic technique of X-ray computed tomography.

Yes tissues and organs are made from cells, but the answer which fitted the question best is C: The immune system is the body's natural defense system that helps fight infections. It is made up of antibodies, white blood cells, and other chemicals and proteins that attack and destroy substances such as bacteria and viruses.

The correct answer was A) : Animals hibernate in order to conserve energy over the winter, when it is hard to find enough food to maintain the energy levels required to function. Their heart rate slows up to 10 beats per minute.

The answer to the last question was A): A growth factor is a naturally occurring substance capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation. Usually it is a protein or a steroid hormone. Growth factors are important for regulating a variety of cellular processes.

The answer to the last question is: A) it inserts itself into the host DNA. A bacterial virus infects the cell by attaching fibers of its protein tail to a specific receptor site on the bacterial cell wall and then injecting the nucleic acid into the host, leaving the empty capsid outside.
