So you are running to catch the bus. Your muscles use up a lot of ATP, you are breathing hard and your heart rate has increased. Which gas is in excess in your body and which is decreased? How did your brain detect this? Using your knowledge of respiration, explain why you are breathing harder.

In access is CO2, a byproduct of cellular respiration. O2 is lacking... Increased CO2 levels increases blood acidity - your brain possesses a mechanism of decreasing pH. You are breathing harder because the electron transport chain requires oxygen as its final electron acceptor. Without it, energy cannot be supplied to your muscles on time.
