Peristalsis is wavelike movement produced by the circular and longitudinal muscle fibers of the intestinal walls that propels the intestinal contents forward. Without peristalsis, the patient would be unable to expel his or her stool, leading to abdominal discomfort, then vomiting, and finally obstruction.
