We encounter dilemmas when we try to define “mental disorders.”  The text considers three viewpoints in
attempting to formulate this definition.  What is the definition of “mental disorder” that the authors decide

The three viewpoints include:
society’s point of view (mental disorder as a violation of cultural standards),
the point of view of people who are affected by the troubled individual (mental disorder as behavior that is self-destructive or harmful to others), and
the point of view of the troubled individuals themselves (mental disorder as emotional distress).
A mental disorder is defined as any behavior or emotional state that causes an individual great suffering, is self-destructive, seriously impairs the person’s ability to work or get along with others, or endangers others or the community.
