Monotremes ARE mammals; to be specific, mammalia is class whilst monotrema is an order within that class. They can differ from other mammals in a number of different ways, but the main is in parity (parous). Monotremes house the only living oviparous mammals.

Edit: That's also how I would describe monotremes. An order that contains all of the extant oviparous mammals.
