A predator feeds in an environment with four different types of prey with the following ei , hi , and Lambdai  values:

      Prey Type   ei   hi   Lambdai
              A      3   0.5   4
              B      8   1.0   2
              C      6   2.0   1
              D      2   1.0   2

Which set of prey, if taken when encountered, will maximize the predator’s rate of energy intake.

I am looking for the equation to figure out this problem.

Well, Ei is the net energetic gain from catching and consuming type-i prey. Hi is handling time for type-i items, and Lambda i is the rate of encounter with prey type i.

Perhaps this is of use to you:

i = index for prey type
• lambdai = rate of encounter with prey of type i (items/time = items/area × area/time)
• Ei = net energetic gain from catching and consuming a type-i prey item
• hi = handling time for type i items (handle = catch + eat + resume search)
• c = energy cost per unit of time while searching

Check out the attached file, the formula is there.

Thank you for the paper - But from it, I am confused which equation is the one that I would use in my case.

I think it's on page 4, bottom. I've never done the calculation so I'm not totally sure.
