Fatty acids are rich sources of energy; 44 moles of ATP are generated by the complete oxidation of 1 mole of a six-carbon fatty acid.

Glycerol is phosphorylated and converted to glycero-3-phosphate using 1 ATP in the process. The glycerol-3-phosphate is converted to dihydroxyacetone and enters the glycolytic pathway, producing 2 ATP per dihydroxyactone molecule converted to pyruvate. Therefore the net ATP for glycolysis is 1 ATP.

The process is best described in the attachment.
