The EEG records brain waves, but is not very detailed in terms of the picture of the brain because only a few dozen electrodes are placed on the scalp. However, it works well for recording abnormalities in brain waves especially in diseases such as epilepsy. The MRI uses highly powerful magnetic fields to determine where there is high activity in the brain. This provides a much better picture and allows researchers to see brain structure, but it cannot record very quick responses such as the startle response.
