We know that the intracellular medium is rich in potassium ions and has a -70 mv potential at rest, while the extra cellular medium is rich in sodium ions. Now these sodium ions enter the membrane by the sodium gate and decrease the electronegativity in the internal membrane. So excess sodium would alter the membrane potential creating an action potential (If it's above the threshold).
