Reading an article like this reminds of that Simpsons episode where Bart adopts a set of eggs, only to find out they are dragons once hatched.

I never thought this would be a problem amongst birds (given their intelligence) until this article pointed it out. I'm sure there are many surrogate bird mothers who have no idea they're taking care of another bird's spawn.

Actually some birds can tell, however some Cuckoos still get their eggs taken care of because the surrogates know the cuckoos will destroy the surrogates eggs if the surrogate doesn't care for the cuckoo egg. Pretty cool stuff!
