Metaphase I of meiosis has the same number of chromosomes as the original cells, while metaphase II of meiosis has half the number of chromosomes. In metaphase I, the homologous chromosomes are arranged in pairs at the metaphase plate, whereas in metaphase II there are no homologs, and therefore, individual chromosomes are arranged separately at the metaphase plate.
