1. Melanin pigments lie under the surface of the skin. Exposure to sunlight increases the production of melanin to protect the skin from UV-rays.

Albinism can be caused by an autosomal recessive (a) inheritance. The dominant allele (A) results in normal production of melanin. An albino lacks normal skin pigmentation.

In the type of albinism described, because melanin production is controlled by an autosomal gene, it is expected that

a)males will inherit albinism from their mothers

b)albinism will occur more frequently among males than females

c)albinism will occur with equal frequencies among males and females

d)males will develop albinism as they mature

2. Four Technologies

1.Technology used to view a brain tumor
2.Biological tool used to cut a desired gene (insulin) from human DNA
3.Process of inserting the human insulin gene into a bacterium genome
4.Biological tool used to insert a gene (insulin gene) into bacterium plasmid (DNA)

Numerical Response:

Match each of the technologies numbered above with its name, as given below.

Technology :  _______      _______       _______     _______
Name :       MRI        Restriction       Ligase        Genetic
                                            enzyme                          engineering

3. An interpretation of Mendel's Law of Segregation is that
a) alleles are expressed independently during meiosis
b)paired alleles separate during meiosis and are distributed into different gametes
c)alleles are expressed independently during mitosis
d)paired alleles separate during mitosis and are distributed into different gametes

4.The breeding of purebred dogs for certain characteristics related to appearance is blamed for the disturbing number of genetic defects in these animals. These defects are most likely the result of
a)high rates of mutation
b)bottleneck effect
c)natural selection
d)non-random mating

5. Gene frequency in a population can change because of  many factors. From the list below, choose those factors that contribute to gene pool change.

1.availability of food
2.mutations
3.disease
4.genetic drift
5.high temperatures
6.crowding and injury
7.non-random mating
8.inheritance of acquired characteristics

Numerical Response:

The factors that cause changes in a gene pool are:
