The number of protons and electrons are the same. Therefore, I take the atomic weight, round to the nearest whole number and subtract the number of protons (atomic number) to get neutrons. Is this correct?

Pretty Much.
You Take the Atomic Number(right corner) and subtract it from the Atomic Mass. For Example, i had yttrium
the atomic number was 39 and the mass was 89. the proton and electron is 39 and neutron was 50,(89-39)
im 11 in 6th grade i had to learn this
and yes thats right
