The priority action of the nurse if a patient has been prescribed a PCA pump postoperatively and the patient’s pain does not respond within the first 2 hours of therapy is to notify the prescriber immediately . This is because the prescriber may need to adjust the patient’s medication regimen or order additional interventions to manage the patient’s pain .
