If an ion has a charge of +2, does it have more protons than electrons or more electrons than protons? Did the ion get the charge because it changed its number of electrons or protons or both?

It lost electrons. It lost 2 electrons to be exact.  Because an electron carries a -1 charge. Ions are only different based on the number of electrons it has in relation to its protons. Therefore it has 2 more protons than electrons. If it lost a proton it would be an entirely different element. My credentials include a 100% overall in my Physics and Chemistry classes in High School, I graduated in 2010, and just finished my first year of college.

It has 2 more protons than electrons, electrons have a negative charge.

it lost electrons, so it now has a positive charge

if you remember that if you are pro something, then you are for it, then pro = positive, so therefore protons would be positive. If an ion has a +2 charge, it has more protons than electrons, which means it would have lost 2 electrons, as protons are not lost or shared.
