If there was nothing seperating the left lung from the right lung, what would have happened when you opened the valve for the left lung? Why

They would collapse because the thoracic wall was punctured and the lungs would be in a single cavity.

It would cause the lung to collapse because the pressure in the pleural cavity is less than the intrapulmonary pressure. Air flows from the lungs causing the collapse of the lung.
