The relationship between race-ethnicity, gender, and poverty among the elderly is a complex issue that has been studied by many researchers. According to a report by the Federation of American Scientists, the poverty rate among aged individuals identifying as single-race Black or African American was 17.8% in 2021, compared with 18.7% for those identifying as Hispanics of any race, 13.3% for the single-race Asian population, 19.7% for the single-race American Indian and Alaska Native population, 8.0% for the single-race non-Hispanic White population, and 14.2% for the aged population identifying with more than one race.

Moreover, conflict theory emphasizes inequality among the aged along gender, race/ethnicity, and social class lines 2. Reflecting these inequalities in the larger society, some elders are quite wealthy, but others are very poor 2.

A study by the American Psychological Association found that up to 19.2 percent of older African Americans and 18.1 percent of older Hispanics live in poverty, compared with an estimated 8.7 percent of older White Americans who live in poverty.

In conclusion, there is a clear relationship between race-ethnicity and poverty among the elderly. The poverty rate is higher among certain racial and ethnic groups than others. Gender also plays a role in this relationship as women are more likely to live in poverty than men.
