In adhesion, there is an attraction between to adjacent bodies/structure like the adhesive on a piece of tape adhering to another surface.

In cohesion, there is an attraction within a structure.  In the case of the tape adhesive, lets say that if you pulled the tape up from the substrate, the adhesive remained attached to the tape and the substrate, but failed throughout itself, that is cohesive failure.

For water, there really isn't much in the way of adhesion, but there is some cohesion via the hydrogen bonding and dipoles, so the water kind of likes to stay with itself.
