Peter decided to enter a 5-mile race designed to raise money for a YU A&P 227 after

class party at Subway. He did not do any preconditioning, nor has he ever trained hard before,

but he does ride his bike and plays tennis. The morning after the race.friday, Peter had

so much pain in both his legs, he was unable to ride his bike to class.

What caused this pain? Name the muscles involved, their origin, insertion, and action, and

what is causing the pain and swelling. Will he ever be able to bike to class again?

there are a lot of parts to the questions. Well seeing is how he deconditioned he has what we like to refer to as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Basically the sarcomeres, which are the functional unit of the muscle fiber, are stretched and pulled harder then they ever have so you have little micro traumas occuring within the sarcomere.

Muscles involved ?
His worst pain is probably in his glut max, quadriceps and hamstrings
   glut max
origin: posterior aspect of the iliac crest
      insertion: posterior femur/ IT band
action: extend the hip and externally rotate the hip
quads (there are 4 of them but i will do general)
      origin: off AIIS, anterior femur
      insertion: patella tendon
      action: extend the knee
   Hamstrings (3 of them)
origin: off various parts of the ischial tuberosity
insertion: 2 of them insert on the medial knee/ tibia, and the last one inserts on the lateral aspect of the knee
      action: flexion of the knee

yes he will be able to ride his bike again, he is just sore. It might take him a week to recover fully, i recommend light easy walking to move the fluid around. But yes he will be riding his bike again in a few weeks.
