Dramaturgy appears to be an interesting comparison to life as we live it, a stage (or soap opera) where we act out a performance in association with significant and generalized others. On the other hand, there are critics of dramaturgy. What are some reasons why dramaturgy may not be an accurate reflection of how we live our lives? Defend it as well, if you feel so inclined.

Life is not a stage production, nor is it a soap opera, in which we make a scheduled appearance, do our thing, and then exit gracefully to prepare for the next performance. Although we do have structured events in life for which we prepare (a lecture, a vacation, a job application, and so on) we usually do not rehearse these events. Some people do rehearse for job interviews and other similar situations, but there are few events or responsibilities that we face that can be performed from a script. Unlike a soap opera or stage production, there are no retakes in life. Teamwork may be questionable. There is little opportunity to make up for a poor performance because of the impact of first impressions. In some cases, our lives are like "Hollywood bloopers" more so than scheduled stage productions.
