Energy transfers in this universe aren't 100% efficient. Sufficient of energy is lost as heat.

Upwards Arrow that's true.

In fact, I believe only 34 percent of the bonds under optimal conditions are converted into ATP.

A car gasoline engine for example, has a 25% efficiency. The rest is lost as heat!
