You are reassessing a 14-year-old patient who was struck by a hit-and-run driver. The patient is not breathing and your partner has performed endotracheal intubation. During your reassessment, you notice a significant amount of gastric distention. ETT placement is confirmed. Both assisted ventilation rate and volume are appropriate. As the distention is interfering with proper ventilation, you should:
A) Place the patient in the recovery position and apply pressure over the epigastrium to expel air from the stomach.
B) Extubate the patient and resume ventilations using a BVM.
C) Insert a NG tube to decompress the stomach.
D) Reduce the tidal volume and increase the ventilation rate to maintain minute volume.
