Hello!

I'm aware that biological nomenclature varies according to the international codes for botany and Zoology. However, I haven't been able to grasp what's the fundamental difference between a syntype and a paratype.

In the topic of species, is there a case in which both can become synonyms?

The paratype is a specimen available in the lab to study the given taxon (species). It is not holotype, isotype or syntype. It is just the specimen cited in the protologue for study. Paratype holds a different meaning for zoology and botany. In botanical nomenclature, a paratype is a specimen cited in the original description that may not have been said to be a type.
A syntype is any one of the two or more specimen taken for the study of the given species when the holotype or isotype is not described. If no types were specified, then all specimens cited are syntypes.
