The psychological perspective includes frustration/scapegoat theory and the authoritarian personality theory. Frustration/scapegoat theory was developed by John Dollard. It applies to people who cannot strike out at the real source of their frustration and therefore look for someone to blame for their troubles (a scapegoat). These scapegoats are often racial, ethnic, or religious minorities, that is, members of groups that are vulnerable because of their lack of power. The authoritarian personality theory was developed by Theodor Adorno. It is supported by research that demonstrates that people in authority see issues, as well as individuals, in extreme terms with no gray areas (white or black). Authoritarian personalities are also confused by ambiguity and are anxious when they must confront norms and values different from their own.
