Failure of the forebrain to develop results in a fatal condition known as anencephaly. Cells of the ectoderm thicken and form the neural plate, which folds inward and deepens. The edges fuse to form a neural tube, which will pinch off from the ectodermal germ layer. The anterior end of the neural tube will become the brain, and the remainder will become the spinal cord. By the end of the fourth week, the anterior end of the neural tube should develop into three enlarged areas called the primary brain vesicles: the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
