Parathyroid hormone, secreted by the parathyroid glands, helps to maintain a high concentration of maternal blood calcium ions because fetal demand for calcium ions is high to support bone development. Parathyroid hormone may pull calcium from maternal bones and teeth for deposit into the blood, thus causing the loss of one or more teeth.
