ABO blood types exhibit the phenomenon of codominance, meaning that some alleles are equally dominant and are therefore equally expressed. IA and IB are codominant alleles, while i is recessive. Someone who is IA IB genotype expresses both A and B antigens on the surface of their red blood cells and thus has blood type, or phenotype, AB.
