Some primatologists believe that the competitive pressures produced by several variables worked together to cause the brain to enlarge and reorganize. If this is true, which of the following occurred first?

Sociality

Innovation

Food resource scarcity

Behavioral flexibility

Hi

Lack of access to or scarcity of resources most likely prompted this.

That's my guess, what are your thoughts?

Hi bio_man,

Thanks for your reply! My guess would also be scarcity of resources. But I also think of the hierarchy or social statuses would cause some competitive pressures.

Does that mean you're going with C?

Keep in mind some differences between the human brain and the brains of chimps:

Quote
While the brain makes up only 2% of our body mass, it consumes more than 20% of our oxygen supply and blood flow. Compare that to only 7-8% in other primate species.

The brain size difference may have been powered by a metabolic shift that meant more fuel for brains, and less fuel for muscles in humans versus chimps.

So the selective force may have been food?

I am going to go with the answer you choose food resources scarcity.
